This is so funny how we are pretending it is so amazing for a woman to become pregnant! Men don’t have vagina’s. She has a vagina – she’s a woman. The legal status does not change biology despit our denial. She may have cut off her breasts and injected herself with male hormones – but she is still a woman.
Tony, I absolutely despise this line of thinking. He says he is a man then he is man. Why is that that others should have a claim to naming you? Only I can name myself, and only Thomas Beattie can name himself, only you can name yourself!

Despise or not, that’s just the way it is, and I for one am not in denial about it. I can pretend all that I want that this is not oxygen I breathe, this is not water I drink, I can live in a fantasy world if I would like, but the facts remain. I don’t believe people that do not agree with this want to have any type of control or a claim to name you. I do believe our children are our future and what ever way we would like to shape our world will affect them. Those of us that decide to have children have to consider the kind of place we are preparing for them. We should feel lucky to be hear and have the life we do. Accept, learn and appreciate. Not slice up, scar, add hormones to, for someone elses perversion/confusion. Come on, keep blindly defending what is a sickness you dont even understand. Try standing for something, rather than just blind arguments. By the way, this is so unfare to this baby. These two women really do seem to love eachother, and that’s great, but don’t force this on everyone who feels it is wrong. By bring a child into this world this way, it opens up a whole new discussion.

I agree she may see herself as a man & that is her business but I truly do not see what is so special about a person born female changing to male (keeps her organs that can allow her/him to carry a child) having a baby, the only thing I can say, is it takes courage to be differenent.
How can anyone trash a couple who wants a child! HIS wife cannot have children, why should they be denied a baby because it makes others uncomftarable?!!!!
i think it is wonderful that thomas can have HIS dream come true. i am a mother of two girls and would be proud to have a girl or a boy that is like thomas. congrats and good luck with your precious joy.
i think it’s really cute! psychologically, there is gender, and there is sex. these are different. gender is your role in society and your self identity, in this aspect, thomas is undeniably a man. sex is in reference to your reproductive organs, in this case thomas would be a woman. but identity is what is important, or at least, what i believe to be important. thomas is a man. if you think he’s not then, you either haven’t taken psychology 100, or you’re being really narrow-minded. i believe self perception is what is important. i don’t think this is a “miracle”–the reproductive organs are all there. but this is really happy because thomas and his wife get to have all the things a typical married couple get to have despite their differences from the average couple, as they deserve. be happy for them! it doesn’t negatively impact you in anyway. they are happy, be happy with them. i never understood why people do not delight in other people’s happiness. why?
I think we all understand sex and gender. What I think most of America is not understanding why the media keeps regarding this as a miracle when in fact it is not. I am truly happy for them!! To each his own!!

Christine – how stupid are you?! Your clitoris is a small version of a man’s genitalia. We all start out the same. Thomas didn’t have his female genitalia removed… so of course he can give birth just the same way as any woman can. And how stupid are you to think someone will “tease” the baby… the couple looks like any other man / woman couple. Even if they didn’t, lots of kids are raised by alternative families – some kids have no “parents” at all. People like you are so ignorant.

I do not think Christine is stupid to think that someone might “tease” or treat this child in an unkind manner, I think that its unfortunate, although highly likely. Let’s see, people have already made mistakes, so let’s compare it, and oh well let’s just justify another selfish move/mistake. I say we both cut some body parts off, take some hormones, and we both have children.” Imagin the wonderful possibilities. Stupid, Ignorant? Look in the mirror.

(I bet a lot of you would say Thomas was a man because you wouldn’t know Thomas’s childhood and that Thomas still has girly parts)
I sit here and read all of your opinions. That’s just it, they are your opinions. So to call each other ignorant or stupid is childish. Maybe you should inform others about certain information instead of putting them down because they do not know or because you believe that their opinion is wrong. Think what you want about this story. Man or woman? Who really cares. Stand up for what you believe in and tell the world if you want.
Instead of arguing right or wrong, man or woman…there are so many other things in life that need our attention.

how does the whole pregnancy work with him injecting himself with male hormones? maybe he stops injecting until the pregnancy is done? personally i think its kinda weird to be legally a male but be able to keep woman parts? obviousley he didnt feel completley like a man!
What about just being happy with who you are and how you were born? Except for those who are born with some kind of disease, disfiguration etc… It’s mutilating the body what bothers me. Future Frankenstein’s because of the operations gone wild and wrong. There are sooo many unhappy people because of their images. Sometimes they make it worse. The doctors are the ones having the most fun with all of the cash coming through. The media love these stories. Even the people who do piercing and tattoos etc… Hey, don’t get me wrong, I would like one or two tribal tattoos, I love art. Here’s the thing, how much is too much when you can’t even recognize the person, your son, your own daughter, parents etc… Do we love our selves less each day? I cannot applaud a parent who helps a young child change their sex with hormones and with what ever there is out there. We need to teach our children to love them selves more so, than just helping them change their image. A child can change his/her ideas in any time. At least wait until he/she is an adult.
It’s interesting to hear that Thomas Beatie did not feel that she was a boy trapped in a girls body. It’s interesting to know that she was first interested in the same sex in her twenties. I get confused because some say she’s a lesbian and she calls herself a man, now a “legally” man. This is a crazy and confused world. Just because a person has dark skin and his skin has changed because of a disease like Vitiligo, it does not make them a caucasian. A person should not forget where they came from. I can change a lot of my features but it will never change who I really am since birth. People tend to want to be something else or somebody else except for themselves. Take Jocelyn Wildenstein who has features of a cat. It does not make her cat although people call her cat woman. What made her so unhappy of herself and her looks? What triggered this change… genes? Everything is about genes these days.
People can go about their business, but why go through the media? They are making this issue everybody else’s business. It would have been better for them if they kept it private…. Why? Not for their sake, but for the Childs sake. Although, one would like to educate the children about all of theses issues they have to deal with other people in school, in the family etc… I think they are making there child’s life difficult. No matter what, no matter where you hide the truth always comes out from people you least expect. We have to put ourselves in the child perspective.
What makes a boy a boy and a girl a girl? How do we explain to our children all of these cases? As for myself I try to include it in my multicultural lecture and at least try to have children respect others, their ways, their culture, religions, beliefs, etc… Trying to explain Thomas Beatie’s case to my child, a nine year old boy, has been very difficult because he just can’t figure it out. It does not make him stupid or ignorant. He simply does not understand. He saw it on the news after watching a kids program. Thomas Beatie daughter will not be a different case. She will wonder and ask a lot of questions. No one can assure she will understand.
On the birth of Thomas Beatie little girl; would he prefer the doctors to say: “Congratulations on your child!” instead of “Congratulations on your little baby girl!” The first thing any parent, who’s had a child, always asks: what is it? Is it a boy or a girl? A baby cannot name him/her self. I cannot name my self; I am either a man or a woman. Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual, transgender … My apologies in advance, but I’m afraid of what’s coming next. These are being “accepted” by society a bit. I’m happy in one hand because it will stop most of the abuse and discrimination against them. Then we have zoosexuality or zoophiles, ‘consensual’ incest, ephebophilia, pansexual, polysexual, asexual, pederasty, necrophiliac, pedophilia, nymphomania, satyriasis and so forth. Sooner or later some of these would love to fight for respect, acceptance and there human rights in society. These human behaviors have existed through all our history and in all culture. Is true identity being lost? I guess nobody will ever be “sexually”, “humanly”, “emotionally”, and “spiritually” satisfied. Would we have to accept every change with in time? This makes me think… how far will human rights go? I’m afraid because politicians would accept anything for a few votes even if it means to destroy a whole society, a country, or our world.

How can we sit back and judge them on being happy, and trying to live their own personal “American Dream” when half of us out there can’t even read or write. They are trying to make a change in this world for the better, Thomas is a man in his eyes, and the eyes of many, just because we don’t believe it, doesn’t make it true. Yes, he does in fact still have the female reproductive organs, meaning, biologically, he is still a women, but this does not make him less of a man. That child will have no problem growing up in the world as long as Thomas and Nancy are good, caring parents who know how to raise a child, unlike most the people walking today. If they turn out to be horrible parents, then, I know, we will all be right back here judging them on it, and stating it was because of Thomas, how he created this “monster.” But how do we have the right to sit here and comment on their lack of reasoning for a child, when we don’t even know how this child will turn out.

I’m 34 with a 9 and 11 yesr old boys. Let me ask you this what if your daughter or son came to you one day and said “Mom, dad I’m not happy who I am. I would be happier a different way.” Would you help and support them or would you disown the child you held when they teethed, rocked to sleep when they had a belly ache, taught how to ride a bike, put bandaides on when they crashed the bike in to the tree, let them crawl into bed with you when they had a bad dream. Wake up America times are changing. All people want in life is to be HAPPY. (myself included) I think we need to figure out how to lower gas prices and to all get along!! Pretty soon ther won’t be anything for us to bitch because we’ll all be gone!!
